Friday prayer for the traveler

The question:

A person traveled from Algiers to Chlef and stayed there three days. The second day was a Friday. So, could he pray the Friday prayer in the mosque or not?

The answer:

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon whom Allah sent as a mercy to the Worlds, upon his Family, his Companions and his Brothers till the Day of Resurrection.

He could perform Friday prayer in the mosque or perform Ad-Dhuhr (noon prayer) by shortening it. However, there is a divergence among scholars as whether it is better to perform Friday prayer or Ad-Duhr prayer.

It is preferable for me to attend Friday prayer and congregational prayers if the person is not traveling and walking. Performing Ad-Duhr prayer by shortening it is better, as there is no proof that the Prophet صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم performed Friday prayer during his journeys, nor did the rightly guided Caliphs after him. Furthermore, it is not reported that they abandoned praying in a congregation whether they were travelers, non-travelers or in a holy war (jihad).

The perfect knowledge belongs to Allah عزَّ وجلَّ. Our last prayer is all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon our Prophet صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم, his Family, his Companions and Brothers till the Day of Resurrection.
